Description:

Signed Kanehisa and authenticated by NBTHK Hozon papers in 1997. This sword is a well-preserved signed Muromachi-period work from the Seki school of Mino Province. Kanehisa was active during the Sengoku period, when Seki developed into one of Japan’s most important sword-producing centers.

The sword has a predominantly suguha-notare hamon and a well-forged itame hada with areas of masame, both characteristic features of the Mino tradition. The combination gives the blade a restrained but attractive appearance, reflecting the practical and robust workmanship for which Seki swords became renowned.

This Kanehisa katana has a typical Muromachi-period sugata, with an elegant curvature and a relatively small kissaki.

The sword is in good condition and in good polish, the nioi-guchi is wonderfully visible and looks very striking. There are only a few small kitae-ware, which are negligible.

The sword is accompanied by a Bakumatsu-period koshirae, dating several centuries later than the blade itself. With a nice signed tsuba and fuchi-kashira.
